CGR Performance driver Dylan Thomas has finished second in the 2017 Formula Vee Nationals at Mallala on the weekend, after a hot contest with fellow NSW driver Michael Kinsella.
Thomas led the first five laps of the 12-lap final, but was ultimately overtaken by Kinsella and crossed the finish line just 0.5s behind his rival.
The runner-up finish for Thomas came after a string of strong performances in the heat races, in which he recorded two seconds and a sixth to secure a front-row start alongside Kinsella for the all-important feature race.
Thomas also resisted opposition from Stephen Butcher in the latter stages of the race, and was pleased to be part of an all-NSW podium.
“It was close racing in all the heats as well as the final,” Thomas said.
“Whenever he’s started on pole position, Michael has always been tough to beat. I’m very happy for him – he’s been trying to win the title for years and he’s finally managed to do it.
“It was also one of Stephen’s best performances – he made me work hard for second place in the final – and really satisfying for us NSW drivers to head over to South Australia and lock out the podium.
“There were some other drivers who were fast – young Blaine Grills from Victoria was catching us towards the end of the final and Simon Pace was quick in the Checkmate as well, but unfortunately didn’t get to start the feature race.
“Overall, it was an enjoyable and competitive weekend of Formula Vee racing and I think we put on a good show for everyone.”
Thomas will be back behind the wheel of his Toyota 86 for the final round of the Australian Toyota 86 Racing Series at the Coates Hire Newcastle 500, 24-26 November.
